Albert Einstein

Not everything that can be counted counts … and not everything that counts can be counted.

E. E. Cummings said it even more brutally: 'Nothing measurable matters ... a very good God damn.' Exactly the opposite of the previous quote, but that doesn't make either untrue, in this intriguing dialectic. Practically speaking, measurement, as mentioned above, is the key to action in business, and necessary for assessing progress. However, the intangibles of life - those things that cannot be counted, measured, quantified or categorised - are at least as important. Things like respect, integrity, quality, fairness, philanthropy, and so on - these form the bedrock of values upon which we build our business, and we dismiss them at our peril.
